Are you trying to lose weight? Do you like eating spicy food? Well good news! Today I will share with you some health and WEIGHT LOSS benefits of spicy food. But before that I just want to clear it with ya’ll that most of these statements/claims are also debatable. But this is what I have gathered so far in my research.
You see I love spicy food. I really do and since I am also trying to lose weight I wanted to know if spicy food does aid in weight loss or not. If you think I listed a misinformation here feel free to send me an email. 😛
Okay so without any further ado here we go.
1. Good for our hearts.
- Hot peppers or chili is really great for our hearts because the CAPSAICIN ( the chemical that makes chili spicy) helps to improve the body’s ability to dissolve blod clots. Spicy food also fights inflammation, which is a risk factor for heart disease. Research shows that people who eat spicy foods frequently have a much lower rate of heart attack and stroke.
- According to the American Association for Cancer Research, Capsaicin slows the growth of cancer cells and in some cases, even causes the cancer cells to die off without harming the surrounding cells. In countries where diets are traditionally high in capsaicin like India and Mexico, people tend to have lower rates of some cancers. One particular spice, turmeric, found in curry powder and some mustards, may slow the spread of cancer and growth of tumors. “It has the same effects on the body as certain cancer drugs do.” says Gregory A. Plotnikoff, M.D., senior consultant for health care innovation at Allina Hospitals and Clinics in Minnesota. Pair it with black pepper to absorb 2,000 percent more turmeric. Fantastic on roasted veggies or kebabs, or in soups.
3. Lower Blood Pressure
- Spicy foods also promote good circulation, and they appear to lower blood pressure. When you eat spicy food, your body’s temperature is raised; therefore, it increases your blood flow and gets your heart pumping. Peppers help strengthen the blood vessel walls as they are high in vitamin A and C. All of this equals a stronger cardiovascular system.
- The extra kick of hot sauce or a chopped jalapeno can make even the most bland diet food more palatable, causing you to be more likely to stick with your weight loss plan. In addition, they may jack up your metabolism. Studies show that the main compound in chilies, called capsaicin, has a thermogenic effect called thermogenesis , the process your body’s cells use to convert their energy into heat. and may cause the body to burn bonus calories for 20 minutes post chow-down. This happens because capsaicin seems to alter the behavior of a protein in your muscles, causing your cells to burn energy — which is then given off as heat — even though you may not be actively using your muscles.
I’m sure there are tons of other benefits of Spicy food, like improved sleep patterns, improved healing rates, mood lifters and what not but there was not much on those topics so I just stuck to the main health benefits of Spicy food.
So as you can see there are a lot of positive effects of spicy dishes, but be cautious though. Make sure that you take it in moderation specially if you have a weak/sensitive stomach or if you are very prone to hyper acidity (like my mother and sister). I’m just glad I can enjoy as much of the spicy food as I want. But if you really want to eat spicy food to enjoy all its benefits, make sure you have some antacids with you to help neutralize the acids in your stomach. Also make sure you have lots of water at ready if your tolerance for that delicious zing is low.
